Theatre in the Square in danger of closing

Marietta’s Theatre in the Square is in danger of shutting its doors. Board members for the theater will decide the organization’s fate on March 16.

Board Chair Mike Russell says the theater has been struggling since 2005 because of the economy. He says recently things have been even more difficult. Russell says the theater owes its landlord more than $125,000 and needs $400,000 to stay open through the end of June.

“After 30 years of putting on award winning performances we absolutely cannot make payroll. And by not making payroll, the board has decided at this point in time it’s time to reach out to the community for some support or close the doors, one of the two.”

So in an effort to keep the theater open for an additional month, Russell says board members have been working to raise $60,000 dollars.

“What we’re hoping to do is to raise the short term cash to pay our bills, to pay our payroll, to pay our electricity to pay our landlord, so we can receive pledges for the additional amount.”

Russell says he’s remaining optimistic that the theater will reach its financial goals.
