Travelers “Happier” This Year, Social Sentiment Index Shows

Consider yourself part of a trend if you think travel is getting better.

That’s because overall, we’re happy-“er” travelers, says Raul Arce.  He’s the Atlanta-based vice president of IBM’s travel and transportation division.

“In terms of the positive sentiment about travel, that’s gone up about 2.5- fold.  So people this season compared to last season are a lot more positive about traveling.”

He knows because we say so on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and a host of other websites.

IBM sells systems that comb through endless posts, spotting trends and separating the sarcastic from the sincere.  The company also uses that data to publish its Social Sentiment Index on all kinds of topics.

And the travel-related topic trending now?

“There’s a fair number of posts being made about traveling with your pets,” he says.

Proof that your opinion matters, especially when it’s shared by tens of thousands of others typing about it into their smart phones.
