Tybee Island 5th Graders Help Prepare for Irma
Students at Tybee Island Maritime Academy, Tybee’s only school, helped prepare for Hurricane Irma Thursday.

People who live on Tybee Island, off Savannah’s coast, are under orders from their city government to leave starting at 8 a.m. Friday, a day earlier than the areas under Gov. Nathan Deal’s evacuation order. That is because high tides ahead of the hurricane are a concern on the island.
Thursday students at Tybee Island Maritime Academy, Tybee’s only school, helped prepare.
Pat Rossiter, principal at the charter school with 276 students in grades K-5, spoke with WABE by phone about the preparations.
“I went over to the fifth grade and said, ‘I need some help,’” Rossiter said. “And they took the entire class down there to the volleyball court. Of course, it’s a beach volleyball court. And we started loading sandbags.”
Rossiter said the fifth graders filled up more than enough sandbags for the school, so the fire department picked the rest up to distribute to other parts of the island.
A restaurant on the island treated the students to pizza to thank them for their hard work.
