Many believe that the presentation of food is second only to the its taste — some might say equally important. Chef Juan Montier is definitely one of them.

Each year, he creates not only an evening of food, but an entire dining experience as a Valentine’s Day pop-up dinner. This year, he’s drawn inspiration from the music of Miles Davis and the cuisine of Spain and Portugal.

“I believe that your food needs to be as beautiful as it is delicious,” Montier says. “Your eyes eat before your mouth does.”

In his dedication to the aesthetics of his food, Montier took to sketching his plates. Judith Montier, Juan’s wife and business partner, compiled some of his drawing into a book.

And if a dinner needs to look delicious, the Montiers think it should sound delicious as well. The Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform at the dinner to set the atmosphere.
