Veteran law enforcement officer Mike Russell says he never thought he’d run for political office.

But says after he saw violence unfolding in Atlanta last year following the eruption of protests in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, he took action.

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Russell told show host Rose Scott that he began speaking out and volunteering to show support for local police officers and after becoming more community-engaged, he received feedback to run for president of the Atlanta City Council.

Russell further explained how his military background, along with his experience in budgeting and city management has prepared him to lead the city council.

Russell also discussed how he plans to address Atlanta’s infrastructure and combat crime.
