When Georgia Department of Transportation officials said this week that the repaired bridge on Interstate 85 in Atlanta would be reopened ahead of schedule, they also released a time-lapse video to show how rapidly the project has taken shape.

The 58-second video released this week shows the round-the-clock work that is expected to be completed by May 26.

The $16.6 million repair job on the collapsed I-85 bridge near Piedmont Road was initially projected to be done by mid-June. But financial incentives and good weather, among other factors, have contributed to the advanced timetable.

Piedmont Road was closed for a day in late April while beams were put in place for the new bridge, and work to begin filling out the new bridge could start later this week, according to Georgia DOT officials.

While I-85 remains closed in both directions north and south of the bridge, Georgia DOT also is repaving the interstate in that vicinity.

GDOT released a video last week showing progress from April 6 – April 25.
