Wells Fargo to donate $1.5 million to the City of Atlanta’s Centers of Hope

Wells Fargo is donating $1.5 million to the city of Atlanta’s Centers of Hope initiative.  Many of Atlanta’s community and recreation centers will see renovations and program improvements as a result.

Under the Centers of Hope initiative, the Thomasville Recreation Center in south Atlanta has gone from servicing about a dozen at-risk kids to more than 170.

Amy Phuong, Atlanta’s chief service officer, says the center now provides a safe, structured learning environment for kids, helping with an array of services, from homework assistance to drug prevention.

“We know that when we invest in these centers, and make it a place where kids really want to come more than anywhere else, we see gains in reading and math and their self-confidence.”

The Wells Fargo grant is the single largest corporate donation to the initiative.

Phoung says as the Centers of Hope initiative expands across the city, the Thomasville Center will act as a model.

“We have lots of other recreation centers that we’ve made some improvements over time so we’re looking to give a big boost to those centers as well.”

The Centers of Hope initiative aims to improve Atlanta’s 33 total recreation and community centers.
