Woods Takes State Superintendent’s Race

The Republicans’ election sweep included the race for state schools superintendent. GOP candidate Richard Woods beat Democrat Valarie Wilson by a wide margin.

Broadcast version.

Early on, Wilson’s supporters were confident.  Noisemakers and confetti sat on tables, ready for a victory celebration. But they remained untouched shortly before midnight when Wilson conceded. She said she was surprised Woods nabbed 60 percent of the vote.

“Everything was up for grabs,” Wilson said. “I never took it for granted that it was done. So, you know, I wish Richard the best. I hope that he will remain focused on and stay focused on what’s best for children.”

Woods says he knows some of the issues he’ll address when he takes office in January.

“I’ve always been an outspoken opponent of the Common Core,” he said. “We will continue to address those needs. In addition to that, looking at teacher evaluations. That’s definitely something that we’re going to have to look at. Associated with that are testing as well.”

The superintendent’s race was an open seat. Current superintendent John Barge stepped down to challenge Gov. Nathan Deal in the Republican gubernatorial Primary.
