Before Tropical Storm Irma hit Atlanta full force last Monday, metal panels were already falling off 34 Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta.

The 32-story office tower is sandwiched between Woodruff Park and Broad Street. And the top of it has metal panels protecting the building’s mechanical equipment.

The Creative Group owns the building and David Barrett is the building manager. He said the owner wasn’t aware of any issues with the panels until Sunday.

“I don’t know how wind got behind there,” Barrett said. “Maybe some of the caulking had failed up there or maybe one of the panels was loose. But anyways, when the wind got behind there it just basically sucked the first panel off.”

About seven panels fell off and no one was hurt. The area around the building was closed off with caution tape for almost a week.

Barrett said workers refastened the remaining panels and those missing will be replaced. He said a structural engineer assessed the building and turned in a report to city officials Friday.
