Zoo Atlanta Prepares To Celebrate Orangutan’s 2nd Birthday

Atlanta’s zoo is getting ready to celebrate the birthday of one of its most popular residents.

Zoo Atlanta says Pongo the Sumatran orangutan turns 2 on Saturday. A primate party is scheduled for that afternoon, complete with wrapped gifts for Pongo and special “cupcakes” for him to share with his parents.

Pongo was born in 2013 to first-time mother Blaze, 18, and father Benny, 35. His birth required a rare Caesarean section.

Blaze was initially unsure about being a mother, and Pongo was cared for by a team of human caregivers for nearly three months. Pongo and Blaze have been inseparable since they were reunited in March 2013

Pongo’s birthday party is free for zoo members and children under 3 and is included in general admission.
