Students at Utopian Academy for the Arts in Clayton County had their first full school day today. It comes after a week-and-a-half long struggle between the state-approved charter school and the city of Riverdale over safety inspections. On Monday, a Clayton Superior Court judge ordered Riverdale to perform what the city said were needed inspections so students could attend school.
Parent and Utopian Board chair Sharon Daniel said having students in the building marks the completion of not only the recent fight but a three year dream. “I’m so happy and excited about us being at this point in our journey in our life. I want you to know as a parent, this is our reason why we stood up and we fought. As a parent, I wanted to take the opportunity to have the right to be able say this is where I want my to child to be educated.”
Utopian Founder and Executive Director Artesius Miller is also relieved students are finally attending classes. “We’re just completely overjoyed. This is something that everyone has worked collectively to make happen over the last two weeks.”
