Financial reports released this week show the race to succeed Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has become the costliest race for that office in state history. And that’s with nearly four months left before November.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the seven contenders in the race, now whittled down to two Republicans and one Democrat, raised and loaned themselves roughly $33 million.
Republican Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle led the pack with a total take of more than $10.5 million. His runoff opponent, Secretary of State Brian Kemp, struggled to keep pace and raised roughly $4.5 million overall.
