Kemp Holds Lead, Abrams Refuses To Concede In Georgia Governor Race

The Georgia governor’s race: Democrat Stacey Abrams, 44, would be the first black woman in American history to be elected governor in any state and the first woman or nonwhite governor in Georgia history. Republican Brian Kemp, 54, is vying to keep the GOP’s hold on a state that is nearing presidential battleground status courtesy of its growth and diversity.

With more than 90 percent of the vote in, the Georgia gubernatorial race remained uncalled as of early Wednesday.

Republican Brian Kemp held a 51 percent to 48 percent lead over his Democratic rival Stacey Abrams, who said she would not concede until all ballots were counted.

The two are meeting in one of the signature contests of the 2018 midterm elections, with potential outcomes ranging from the election of America’s first black female governor to another four weeks of bitter, race-laden campaigning.
