Wanona Satcher sees a world of possibilities in a box. The certified modular builder and landscape architect sees things like rapid and affordable housing, medical clinics, disaster relief stations and more.

Understanding the need for adequate and equitable housing, in 2017, Satcher says she founded Mākhers Studio in the basement of her home in West End Atlanta. Over the past few years, Satcher has been able to scale her construction and management firm, which specializes in transforming shipping containers into retail and housing solutions. Mākhers Studio is now housed inside a 25,000-square foot factory on 4 acres of land in East Point, Georgia.

From conception to finish, she and her husband oversee the customization projects of mostly used, steel shipping containers into energy-efficient Plug In Pods that can be used as multipurpose spaces. Mākhers Studio can build a variety of units including individual, stacked, ADA-accessible units and multifamily units. Stacher says she is currently working on a project to build affordable housing units for veterans and families in Durham, NC.
