When thinking about travel expert and public broadcasting host Rick Steves, we may picture him on a hilltop overlooking the city of Florence, inside the Basilica of St. Peter’s in Rome, or outdoors seated at a Parisian café.

But long before his name became synonymous with Europe, Rick Steves traveled to destinations east of Europe that he chronicles in his new book, “On the Hippie Trail: Istanbul to Katmandu and the Making of a Travel Writer.” Steves joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to discuss those adventures.

“It’s just a vivid fun account of the making of travel writer and the takeaway is how people can have their own hippie trail experience and why that’s important,” said Steves.
