STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Stone Mountain Mayor Beverly Jones faces new accusations about her handling of city finances, accusations that she calls a “witch hunt.”

At the Stone Mountain City Council meeting on May 6, Councilmember Mark Marianos requested the city attorney draft a resolution to remove Jones’ authority to make financial decisions on behalf of the city, pending an inquiry. City Manager Shawn Edmondson is conducting the inquiry and notified the council after the city’s bank, Truist, alerted him to a potential problem.

Edmondson told the council he contacted Truist about a wire transfer. Truist emailed him and said that two weeks previously, the mayor showed the bank a city resolution that removed everyone but herself as a signer for the account. The council did not approve the resolution Jones presented to the bank and it’s unclear who wrote it.  Mayor Pro Tem Ryan Smith and Councilmember Teresa Crowe had previously been listed as signatories on the city’s account. Both are currently city officials.

“We were told that everybody had been removed and there was only one signator,” Edmondson said.
