A Drag Queen Christmas” returns to Atlanta Symphony Hall on Dec. 26 as part of its 11th annual national tour. This year’s run spans 38 cities across the United States, with performances scheduled from mid-November through the end of December.

From smaller tour to national circuit

When “A Drag Queen Christmas” launched more than a decade ago, Atlanta was one of the tour’s four stops. Over time, the musical revue has expanded moving through theaters, performing arts centers and, increasingly, large civic venues across the country. This year’s stops include Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas, Nashville and Atlanta, reflecting the tour’s growth into a full national circuit.

“It’s a show that marks how we as a country and a culture are evolving to have a variety of traditions,” said Nina West, who is hosting the show for the fifth year.

How the production works

The structure of “A Drag Queen Christmas” combines several individual acts with a rotating cast. Each year’s lineup features performers from “RuPaul’s Drag Race and related franchises, with each artist contributing a solo number within the framework of a shared holiday celebration.

Suzie Toot, who is appearing on the tour for the first time this year, said the show reflects the range of backgrounds represented within the cast.

“I am Jewish myself,” Toot explained, “so there’s a Hanukkah number in the show.”

Because “A Drag Queen Christmas” operates as a traveling show, performers spend several consecutive weeks on the road together during the holiday season.

“For queens who have done this for many years,” West said, “it’s its own holiday tradition.”

The tour’s longevity has also produced repeat audiences.

“At every single meet and greet, there’s at least a handful of people who say, ‘This is my sixth time here,’” Toot said.
