Georgia Power, the utility monopoly that supplies electricity to the majority of the state, filed a request with state regulators to increase its rates by 7 percent starting next year.
The average utility customer would see their bills go up starting at about $10 a month, up to more than $16, the utility said.
The ask now goes before the state Public Service Commission, who would have to vote on and approve the increase.
