Alvin Ailey Goes Uptown

New show from game-changing dance company hits the Fox

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater began in New York in 1958 and has been an innovative, perception-changing force in American dance ever since.

Under the guidance of Artistic Director Judith Jamison, 18 year company member Matthew Rushing created a new show while recuperating from an injury that kept him off the stage. Entitled Uptown, the show is a vibrant tour through the Harlem Renaissance era in all its boisterous, swinging glory, incorporating the works of Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, Fats Waller, and many others.

WABE's Lois Reitzes recently sat down with the young choreographer after a performance at the Fox Theater to find out how Uptown came to be.
