During the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, artist and MacArthur fellow Amanda Williams responded to the slogan with questions of her own – “Whose Black lives?” “What kinds of Black?” A series of paintings was born, exploring in greater depth the numerous meanings that Blackness encompasses.
These and works-in-conversation by other contributing artists are part of the exhibition “We Say What Black This Is,” now on view at Spelman College Museum of Fine Art through May 24.
“City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke with Williams about this exhibit. Williams shared how students helped define the exhibit.
“There’s a generational freshness that they brought to the entire process, and they could understand and see this subject matter through a different lens,” she said.
