America’s Drop-Out Crisis and Public Health

– U.S. Education Department figures for 2008 show that only 70% of high school seniors graduated; among minorities, low-income, and urban students the graduation rate was as low as 50%. The connection between public health and the drop-out rate was one topic of conversation between WABE’s Steve Goss and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin.

The U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, spoke to WABE 90.1 FM about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and the importance of reducing the high school dropout rate nationwide.  Dr. Benjamin says there is an association between education and a variety of health measures. She cited statistics that indicate several health disparities among those with a high school diploma and those without. Dr. Benjamin stressed the importance of a collaborative effort from parents, the community, and additional school resources to combat the high school dropout rate.  The U.S. Surgeon General described the extent of the dropout crisis and the impact from nutrition and other health related factors.
