Atlanta-based band 'Twisty Cats' describe themselves as dancy, dark 'Techno-Goth-a-Billy'

On City Lights’ “Speaking of Music” series, local musicians share work and stories in their own voices. Today we feature Peter Mavrogeorgis and Blake Olmstead of the Techno-Goth-a-Billy band, “Twisty Cats.” Mavrogeorgis is a vocalist and guitarist, and Olmstead is a vocalist, keyboardist, and bassist for the 5-member band.

“I don’t often write with a guitar in my hand. I tend to write lyrics, melody, first … a habit that grew from listening to many, many hours of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Kate Bush, Patti Smith,” says Mavrogeorgis. “For me, the lyrics and the melody come first.”

Although life’s twists and turns lead the two to New York, the road ultimately led back to Atlanta’s more close-knit music scene.

In Atlanta, they like to visit venues like The EARL, 529 Bar, the Star Community Bar, the Masquerade and the Eastern to hear live music.

The group’s newest single, “Skin Hunger,” now available, channels the isolation that the country felt during pandemic lockdowns.
