Some streets and sidewalks could become private property after the Atlanta City Council voted Monday evening to abandon portions of Underground Atlanta.

At the end of November, Councilman Kwanza Hall introduced legislation to abandon parts of Pryor Street, Alabama Street, and Plaza Way. This means the roads and sidewalks that were once public property can now be owned and controlled by a private entity.

The reason behind the plan is simple: Atlanta wants to sweeten the deal with WRS Inc., the Charleston, South Carolina, developer who has been in talks with the city to purchase Underground Atlanta.
