Atlanta Falcons Make Pre-draft Defensive Move

The clock was ticking as NFL teams were set to make selections in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

The Atlanta Falcons had the 55th pick but that wasn’t going to take place until the second draft day on Friday.

So, they made a key addition to the team.

WABE’s Rose Scott reports on the newest Falcon.

Yes you play to win the game but that also means you have to stop the other team from scoring.

The Atlanta Falcons have signed Asante Samuel to help do that.

On the field, his job is simply defined as keeping opposing wide receivers out of the end zone.

“Falcons fans hope that he can shut down half the field and so do the Falcons,” says Stephen Black.

Black of Score Atlanta sports magazine says Asante Samuel is a seasoned player and sometimes that’s code for aging player.

But he adds the Falcons are pretty desperate and they really needed to add a player of Samuel’s caliber.

“The Falcons are pretty desperate for secondary help especially at cornerback so they were able to get for a pretty easy inexpensive price.”

That price is $18.5 million dollars for 3 years.

The Falcons traded a 7th round draft pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for Asante Samuel.
