An anti-violence organization is tapping Atlanta for an ambitious initiative that has shown promising results in curbing gun violence by investing in community groups already doing that work.

In the two years since it was formed, the Coalition to Advance Public Safety (CAPS) has invested $500,000 in each of four U.S. cities — Baltimore; Indianapolis; Newark, New Jersey; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana — to expand and strengthen local programs that support people at the highest risk of being victims or perpetrators of violence.

But, the work is far from being done.

“We have seen a national decline in gun violence, but we cannot afford to take our foot off the pedal,” Erica Atwood with CAPS partner Cities United said at an event in Southwest Atlanta on Tuesday.
