Atlanta Public Schools Planning Longer Summer Break For Next 3 Years

Summer break for Atlanta Public Schools students could be longer in coming years as officials are working to set calendars.
News outlets report the school board tentatively approved calendars for the next three years on Tuesday that have school starting more than a week later.
The later start would shorten students’ weeklong breaks in the fall and winter to four-day weekends, but the school year will still end around Memorial Day.
The proposals still give students a week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks off over Christmas and New Year’s Day, and a weeklong spring break.
Superintendent Meria Carstarphen told board members administrators created the schedule after conducting a survey that received more than 11,000 responses. She says officials reduced breaks during the school year to schedule more training for teachers.
