Atlanta Public Schools Terminating Jobs Under Reorganization Plan

The Atlanta Public Schools have notified administrators and more educators their jobs are being eliminated.

Job termination letters have already been sent.

WABE’s Rose Scott reports its part of the district’s reorganization plan.

When school lets out for the upcoming summer break, more than a hundred APS jobs will be eliminated.

Faculty and staff from the seven schools headed for closure will lose their positions.

That’s under the school system’s redistricting plan.

APS spokesperson Keith Bromery says there other reasons.

For example, “the consolidation of the high schools and mergers of schools with split campuses,” says Bromery.

Bromery says some of the jobs are in the curriculum and instruction division.

He did not have a specific number of employees that would be affected.

However, during the last APS board meeting, 120-jobs in that department were discussed for termination.

There will be an internal APS job fair this coming Saturday.

Bromery says despite the many job losses, there will be new job listings as school enrollments increase, “which means they’ll need faculty at those schools with increased numbers and there will be principals there at these job fairs who will interview prospective candidates from inside the organization.”

Bromery says the job terminations are not linked to any budget deficit.
