Buckhead Group Worries Residential Zoning Changes Threaten ‘City In The Forest’

In March, the Atlanta Department of City Planning published “Atlanta City Design Housing,” a document that examines “how housing policy shaped Atlanta’s design, how that design impacts the city’s residents, and ways to design it for everyone.”

Some Buckhead neighborhoods are worried proposed residential zoning reforms may threaten the city’s unique tree canopy and even worsen its affordable housing shortage.

The issues highlighted a recent Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods meeting, where leaders discussed revisions the city is considering to single-family zoning. Gloria Cheatham, incoming president of the Tuxedo Park Civic Association, said the changes would be a boon to developers whose projects would clog Buckhead with street parking and reduce greenery.

Cheatham also said the reforms could exacerbate gentrification in neighborhoods outside of Buckhead, such as East Atlanta and West End.
