Cohutta Wilderness Reopens After Massive Wildfire

The Cohutta Wilderness in North Georgia is now open again, after the Rough Ridge fire burned nearly 28,000 acres in Fannin, Gilmer and Murray counties.

A lightning strike started the fire in mid-October, and firefighters got it 100 percent contained earlier this week.

The trails in the wilderness are all open, though the U.S. Forest Service warns people to watch out for narrow or missing trail segments, weakened trees that could still fall and flash-flooding.

The agency says that in the vast majority of the area that burned, the fire was not severe. More trees could turn out to have died due to the fire and drought, but the Forest Service says it won’t know the full extent until spring, when trees begin growing leaves again.
