At Dad’s Garage Theatre, competition isn’t really the point. This month, the Atlanta improv institution launches its third-annual TheatreSports Tournament, a multi-week series built around fake rivalries, loose rules and the shared energy of people sharing a good time in real time.

Running Jan. 9–31, the TheatreSports Tournament brings performers and audiences together for a format that treats laughter not as a reaction, but as part of the show itself.

How the TheatreSports Tournament grew out of a global idea

Years ago, Dad’s Garage staged a very different kind of competition. When the company was based in Inman Park, ensemble members hosted what they called the World Domination Tournament, an intentionally over-the-top event that flew improvisers from around the world in for a weekend of play — tournament-style.
