Former White House Chef Brings Thanksgiving Meal To Homeless

A former White House Chef is in Atlanta this week, helping to serve a Thanksgiving meal to residents at a homeless shelter.

The City of Refuge is a former warehouse-turned-shelter that houses 300 women and children in West Atlanta.

Chef John Moeller worked in the White House between 1992 and 2005. He said he’s looking forward to serving these residents cranberry relishes, fresh pumpkin pie and roasted turkey.

“These are people who are a little bit down and out,” Moeller said. “They’re just trying to make it by and some come here and they’re here for a while and some people come here for a couple of weeks. So to have something a little bit different than normal and make a little connection with them, just makes them feel better.”

The City of Refuge also offers childcare, medical services, social services, an on-site school and job training.

Over the past year and a half, Moeller has helped train some of the students at the shelter in its culinary arts program, which grants students a certificate if they complete the 10-week course.

Five culinary students are helping him prepare Thursday’s Thanksgiving meal.
