The Forsyth County School District is one of many municipalities that have announced plans to opt out of the new statewide adjusted base year homestead exemption established by House Bill 581.

The state legislature passed the bill in 2024, and Georgia voters approved the exemption in November. During that election, Forsyth County voters approved a separate homestead exemption from the school district’s property taxes.

Forsyth’s existing homestead exemption, which leaders say offers a better deal for residents, will remain in place regardless, but now district officials are seeking feedback from residents on whether to opt out of HB 581.

Forsyth Superintendent Mitch Young joined “All Things Considered” to talk about what the decisions means for residents and the district.

To officially opt out, the county has to hold three public hearings, inviting residents to participate in the decision. The final vote on the opt-out resolution is scheduled to take place before March 1, 2025.
