Depending on whom you ask, the use of Native American mascots in sports teams can be viewed as a form of cultural appropriation or as a symbol of honor.

Marty and Chris Buccafusco are lifelong fans of the Atlanta Braves. However, from what they know about American history, the brothers take issue with how the team is representing Indigenous People. From that, they founded Bravest ATL, which is pushing the team to reconsider its branding.

Despite public backlash, plus Washington, DC and Cleveland renaming their hometown teams, officials for the Atlanta Braves have held firm in not changing their name. On today’s “Closer Look,” show host Rose Scott spoke with the Buccafuscos about whether they believe their mission for a name change will be successful.
