Georgia COVID-19 cases up again ahead of Memorial Day holiday

Georgia’s increase in COVID-19 cases continues to surge ahead of the Memorial Day holiday. The number of people across the state hospitalized for the virus is also up.

Department of Public Health numbers show Georgia has 15,144 new cases, up from more than 11,000 a week ago. And officials say there are 540 people hospitalized with COVID-19.

Health experts caution that current case counts don’t capture every positive case since so many people are testing at home these days. But they remain much lower than this winter’s surge.

Anyone with symptoms is urged to get tested.

The Atlanta-based United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends vaccines and booster shots as the best way to avoid severe illness, hospitalization and death.
