On a recent Sunday afternoon, a handful of amateur comedians ran through a final practice before a first performance at a venue attached to an Atlanta brewery. Delivering their sets on stage for the first time, the new standup comics got feedback on their delivery and made tweaks to some of their punchlines.

First up was Liz Green, a former longtime ICU nurse.

“The best 25 years of my life,” she said from the stage, “my profession took from me.”
