A man who shot and killed a Gwinnett father of six has been convicted of murder.

According to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office, a jury found 28-year-old Esteven Avila-Vega guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm for the shooting death of Angel Mendoza-Ramirez, 39.

On April 16, 2023, during a baby shower attended by Avila-Vega and several family members, an inebriated relative shot himself in the leg.

“Mendoza-Ramirez took the handgun from the relative and put it away to prevent any further misfires near children in attendance,” the DA’s office said in a Saturday press release. “Avila-Vega, however, demanded that the firearm be returned.”

From there, the defendant initiated an argument with Mendoza-Ramirez before pulling out his own handgun and shooting the victim over a dozen times.

Avila-Vega and his girlfriend, Sulma Mejia-Orellana, were both arrested and booked by Gwinnett County Police shortly after the incident.

“There is no place for gun violence in Gwinnett County, but a baby shower is an especially egregious place to be armed,” said Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson in the release. “Our hope is that this verdict gives Mr. Mendoza-Ramirez’s family healing that they truly deserve.”

The DA’s office states that sentencing will occur at a later date.
