An energy audit is an inspection that assesses how much energy a home consumes to better determine how it can be more energy efficient. An energy audit can help new homeowners save money through energy efficiency, tax credits and more.

However, an energy audit is not a required step in the home-buying process. Federal data also reveals that low-income households spend a larger share of their income on energy costs than other households and that Georgia ranks in the top 5 states with the highest energy burden.

On Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look,”  energy justice advocate Cosco Jones, a consultant and owner of Jones Sustainable Solutions Group, discusses what a proper “energy audit” should look like and how poor energy efficiency has long-term consequences for a homeowner’s budget and well-being.
