Michael Lucas says what keeps him up at night is how to advocate for the communities he serves and the survivors of intimate partner abuse. It’s one of his primary responsibilities as the executive director of the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation. But the added challenge for Lucas and many other nonprofits is the loss of federal funds.
“At the same time that we’re seeing an increase in incidents of domestic violence and of needs, we’re also seeing the most uncertainty in terms of sustainable funding for our services that we’ve ever seen,” said Lucas.
He says AVLF is now having to tier where their funding goes, with 40% of their dollars coming from the federal government. While they’ve managed to cover the cost this year for eviction prevention, they’re now working to cover the 50% shortfall for survivors of domestic violence.
