Margo Price Overcomes Hardships On ‘Midwest Farmer’s Daughter’

Margo Price has had the kind of year that musicians dream about.

The singer-songwriter rose from relative obscurity in the Nashville music scene on the strength of hard-luck songs about alcohol and loss, and made appearances on “Saturday Night Live” and “A Prairie Home Companion” along the way.

“I definitely had faith in the songs,” Price told music contributor Mara Davis while in town for a recent show at Terminal West, “but I don’t know that I projected that it would go this far.”

Price’s debut album, “Midwest Farmer’s Daughter,” quickly hit  No. 5 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart following its release in March. The album came out on Jack White’s Third Man Records label.

“The question that gets asked a lot is ‘Now that everything’s going good for you, what are you going to write about?’” Price said. “There’s so many things to write about in the world as far as women go. The pay gap is something I’m really passionate about.

“So now that I’ve worked through a lot of my deep-seated emotional issues, I’ll maybe start working on the world again.”
