Lockheed Martin’s production facility in Marietta celebrated a milestone. It delivered its 2,500th Hercules C-130 aircraft.

When Lockheed designed the Hercules in the 1950s, a famous engineer said it would be lucky to sell 100 of the massive transport aircrafts.

“So here we are at 2,500, 60 years later,” said Tony Frese, vice president and deputy program manager of Lockheed Martin’s C-130 Programs.

The Hercules is the longest continually produced military aircraft in the world. It’s been updated over the years, of course – this latest model is a C-130J. But Frese says, there’s one attribute it’s always had: versatility.

“This aircraft does many different missions; it’s not just military missions. It does humanitarian missions, rescue missions,” said Frese.

The plane sent off Friday isn’t going too far from Marietta. Its new home is Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta.
