Metro Atlanta schools closed Tuesday ahead of winter weather

Metro Atlanta school districts have canceled in-person instruction on Tuesday ahead of predicted below-freezing temperatures and possible snow.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency to prepare for the incoming winter weather. The National Weather Service of Peachtree City, Georgia, has issued a winter weather advisory for parts of north and central Georgia, including the metro Atlanta region, from Tuesday 10 a.m. to Wednesday 7 a.m. The NWS is predicting less than 1 inch of snow accumulation.

According to the NWS, road conditions during this time could be slippery and hazardous. Many schools cited the potential dangers of school buses and students navigating icy roads on Tuesday.



Atlanta Public Schools is closing all schools and offices on Tuesday, though annual duty employees will continue to work from home.

Fulton County Schools announced Monday afternoon that it will close all schools and administrative offices and cancel all meetings and extracurricular events on Tuesday with “no expectation of remote learning.” FCS has instructed its employees to complete work remotely or take a personal day if their work cannot be done remotely.

The school system has not made a decision on whether to also cancel school Wednesday.

Cobb County Schools, Henry County Schools and Marietta City Schools are also closing its schools and offices and canceling extracurriculars on Tuesday. HCS will make an announcement about whether schools will continue to normal operations on Wednesday by Tuesday afternoon.

Gwinnett County Public Schools, Clayton County Public Schools, DeKalb County School District and Rockdale County Public Schools have announced remote, asynchronous learning days and remote workdays for employees.

This is the second time this year that winter weather has caused metro Atlanta school districts to close.
