The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recognizes April as National Fair Housing Month. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 prohibits housing discrimination. However, housing scholar Richard Rothstein says the legislation has not been enforced adequately in the past.

Rothstein, author of “The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America” and co-author of “Just Action: How to Challenge Segregation Enacted under the Color of Law,” returned to “Closer Look” as a featured guest on Monday. He discussed the importance of community-led action in response to the Trump administration’s housing policies and the historical context of unequal housing practices in the U.S.

Rothstein also stressed that people should not be afraid of the federal government’s actions and explained why he feels there are so many things that people can do locally to improve affordable housing access.
