Deciding on what college to attend after high school is a big decision. It’s a decision that requires research and weighing the pros and cons.

And it was no different for NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday host Ayesha Rascoe. The award-winning journalist described herself as a top student in high school. But Rascoe admits she had concerns about whether she had what it took to be successful at Howard University.

Looking back, Rascoe says she made the right choice in attending the elite institution.

On Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Rascoe talked with show host Rose Scott about her experience at Howard and her new book, “HBCU Made: A Celebration of the Black College Experience.” The book is a collection of essays by alums of historically Black colleges and universities and how their time at the schools shaped their lives.
