Thomas Lázaro, the Executive Director for PALS Atlanta, and Jim Marks, who goes by the stage name, Bubba D. Licious, are marking more than 30 years of serving local pet owners who are living with critical illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, plus the who are disabled, veterans of US armed forces and the elderly. The 1980’s and early 1990’s are remembered as a scary time for many people in the LGBTQ+ community, and people living with HIV.  At the time, Thomas Lázaro was growing up in a small South Carolina town.

“There were a lot of folks that moved to Atlanta and then came back in a coffin. It was a scary time,” Lázaro said.

But for many, it was also a resilient time. Lázaro now serves as the Executive Director for PALS Atlanta, a 501(c)(3) organization, that provides food and low-cost healthcare for the pets of owners who are in challenging stages of life, such as persons living with critical illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, the disabled, veterans of US armed forces and the elderly.
