The 1980’s and early 1990’s are remembered as a scary time for many people in the LGBTQ+ community, and people living with HIV. At the time, Thomas Lázaro was growing up in a small South Carolina town.
“There were a lot of folks that moved to Atlanta and then came back in a coffin. It was a scary time,” Lázaro said.
But for many, it was also a resilient time. Lázaro now serves as the Executive Director for PALS Atlanta, a 501(c)(3) organization, that provides food and low-cost healthcare for the pets of owners who are in challenging stages of life, such as persons living with critical illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, the disabled, veterans of US armed forces and the elderly.
