As the universal mover of hearts and minds, music serves a role in social reform, protest and movements of change. A new course at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology invites students to dig deep into the roots of protest music.

The class is “Songs of Protest: Canticles, Spirituals and Soundtracks of the Movements, ” led by accomplished scholar, musician, author and professor James Abbington. Professor Abbington joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to discuss the course’s entails.
