A new investigative ProPublica report found that a Georgia woman died after not receiving treatment for complications from an abortion.
According to the report, Amber Nicole Thurman, 28, traveled to North Carolina and took abortion medication. When she returned to Georgia, she had complications, and some of the fetal tissue did not expel from her body. Doctors at Piedmont Henry Hospital monitored her infection, but waited 20 hours to operate. Thurman died soon after. Thurman is believed to be one of two Georgia women who have died after not having access to abortion care.
On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Kavitha Surana, a reporter at ProPublica, discussed her article and explained how experts say Thurman’s death was preventable. She also talked about the ongoing implications of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022.
