Wondering why, according to reports, Maroon 5 will be the headliner for the Super Bowl LIII halftime show in Atlanta?

Rihanna has something to do with it.

The “Work” singer was the front-runner to headline the Feb. 3 show, according to Entertainment Tonight. But she rejected CBS and the NFL’s proposal in order to show her support for Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem.

“The NFL and CBS really wanted Rihanna to be next year’s performer in Atlanta,” an insider told US Weekly. “They offered it to her, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy. She doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance.”

Kaepernick, the former quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, was the first NFL player to kneel during the anthem in 2016. He said he knelt to show his objections to racism and the police shootings of African-Americans.

A source told Entertainment Tonight that pop star Pink was also approached for the job, but she ended negotiations for it because the process took too long.

Maroon 5 was offered the Super Bowl headliner gig in September, ET reports.
