As we celebrate 50 Years of Atlanta Symphony broadcasts on WABE, it is impossible to ignore the influence of Robert Spano. After twenty seasons as music director, Spano continues his association with the orchestra as Music Director Laureate, delighting Atlanta concertgoers with his signature warmth, humor, and dazzling artistry.

Spano is renowned for his ability to let the members of his orchestras shine, an ethos he says is crafted by “harnessing the creative fuel, not dictating to it.” That concept is certainly different from an autocratic style of classical conducting, but Spano’s approach has won him many admirers, especially from within his own orchestras.

It’s widely known that the ASO members have a special place in their hearts for Spano, largely because of his ability to lead with grace and natural effectiveness.

He recently joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to reflect on some highlights of his years on the ASO podium.
