'Speaking of Art': Drew Borders

Drew Borders' Mural on the Ormewood Ave. Bridge on the BeltLine (Art Rudick)

Drew Borders is an Atlanta-born and -based visual artist, focused on mural paintings and works in digital illustration and animations. Borders likes bold, bright colors with recurring yellows, pinks and blues.

“I just want people to feel the same energy that I’m feeling when I create it,” Borders said.

She often features Black and brown women in stylistic portraiture, considering representation an important aspect of her artistic practice.

“I think I’ve always been inspired by a desire for representation,” she said. “I know how bad of an impact it can have on your self-esteem when you don’t see people who look like you or your family members in the media, so I wanted to change that.”

A big fan of anime and manga, Borders uses the motifs of exaggerated and idealized features with enthusiasm in her own work.

Borders’ work can be perused on her Instagram account, @drewborders.art. For an in-person glimpse, Atlantans can visit her six local murals adorning walls on the corner of James P. Brawley and MLK Dr., at Bonfire ATL in Bankhead, at the Beacon near Grant Park, on the side of The Real Milk & Honey in College Park and at the Stacks Lofts in Cabbagetown; Drew Borders also painted the Ormewood Ave. Bridge on the BeltLine.
