When Johnson Publishing created Ebony Magazine in 1945 and Jet magazine in 1952, the Black American narrative was changed forever. Images of Black people in America appeared in a format as representative and glossy as Life Magazine and other mainstream publications.

Theaster Gates: Black Image Corporation” is a new exhibition on view at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art. Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee is director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, and she joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes earlier in the week.

Here she explains how the prominent artist, Theaster Gates, helped to bring the exhibition to Spelman. The exhibition is on view through May 16 at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art.
